Bioactive glass structure is is engineered to correct deformities and fill osseous defects.
August 22, 2025
By: Michael Barbella
NovaBone Products LLC is gearing up to showcase its Bioactive Pre-contoured Wedge (BPW) at the 2025 American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) Annual Meeting next month in Savannah, Ga.
NovaBone claims the Bioactive Pre-contoured Wedge is the first fully synthetic, porous bioactive glass solution to be marketed and is, specifically, designed with osteostimulation in mind. BPW reportedly is the first non-metal wedge that is classified as a device, prioritizing patient safety and intra-operative effectiveness. It is engineered to correct deformities and fill osseous defects, while providing a fully resorbable, bio-integrative scaffold that promotes and accelerates bone regeneration, according to the company.
“NovaBone’s Bioactive Pre-contoured Wedge is an innovative solution for orthopedic and podiatric surgeons, leveraging our superiority in bioglass manufacturing,” NovaBone Vice President of Marketing & Business Development Scott Day said. “This new wedge provides an efficacious and affordable alternative to metal. Additionally, because the wedges are manufactured in the U.S.A. and have a five-year shelf life, they are easy to stock, which reduces reliance on vulnerable global supply chains, limits tariff exposure, and eliminates problematic lead times.”
Key benefits of the NovaBone Bioactive Pre-contoured Wedge include:
“Its pre-contoured shape supports efficient surgical workflow, and may provide a safe and effective scaffold for new bone growth,” stated Charles Cook, M.D., clinical assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at The University of North Texas Health Science Center, and author of a retrospective case study on BPW. “This, then, ensures surgical site stability and minimizes graft failure. As surgeons, we need this product in our toolkit.”
Visitors to NovaBone’s AOFAS 2025 booth (#544) can try the wedge in a hands-on model, giving a tactile sense of its handling and anatomical placement. Additionally, the NovaBone team will be sharing insights and engaging in live science discussions.
NovaBone Products develops synthetic bone graft technologies, offering a portfolio of bioactive solutions that support bone regeneration, healing, and repair. Founded on decades of research in bioactive glass science, NovaBone’s proprietary Bioglass technology is both osteoconductive and osteostimulative—actively supporting the body’s natural healing process by signaling and recruiting bone-forming cells. With more than 20 years of proven clinical use and more over 2 million devices implanted worldwide, NovaBone creates safe, effective bone regeneration solutions. All NovaBone products are manufactured in the United States and designed to deliver reliable outcomes for patients and surgeons alike.
